Boys State 2010
Thirty-three young men from local Denton County high schools, sponsored by Denton American Legion Post 71, attended the 2010 Boys State on the Austin Campus of the University of TEXAS. Boys State is an annual, weeklong activity, held immediately following the completion of Spring Semester classes. This year Boys State meet June 2010.
At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The cities and political parties are fictional. The training is objective and practical with city, county, and state governments operated by students elected to the various offices.
Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, band chorus, and recreational programs. Expenses are paid by the Post, and through the generosity of many area civic and service organizations - as well as individuals – who donate scholarships. This community synergy allowed these 33 young men to be citizens of the mythical cities, to partake in campaigns and elections, and to generally be immersed in Patriotism.
The young men get a chance to live responsibly, and productively, as members of society. They have the opportunity to meet, and make life-long friends, with their peers from high schools throughout the State of TEXAS.
Boys State delegates are selected from male youth who have completed their Junior year in high school, and have at least one more semester of the Senior year. The American Legion Auxiliary hosts a similar program for young ladies of similar academic age.
